Constructing Snow Cover (Alfred A. Hart, 1868)

This picture, taken at the east end of the gallery which extended about one half mile below tunnel no. 8, reveals the narrow shelf which was blasted into the face of the precipitous cliff to provide a foundation for the railroad. To establish the initial lines for this excavation, surveyors were lowered by ropes over the cliff in several places. One flagman was inadvertently left dangling one day while the rest of the survey crew broke for lunch.
