Before the Donner Summit route was completed, teams of oxen were used to haul the first locomotive across the mountains from Cisco over the wagon road in July 1867. Still unassembled and in crates, the locomotive was carried to Truckee, where it was pieced together. The following winter three additional locomotives were pulled across the snow-covered peaks on sledges. By the time Hart took this picture toward the east in August 1868, the railroad across the mountain was complete. Truckee became a regular crew change point in January 1869.
