Heading of east portal Tunnel No. 8 (Alfred A. Hart, 1867)

Hart photographed this water—or perhaps tea—carrier outside the east end of tunnel no. 8 in the summer of 1867. Chief Engineer Montague called this the “finest tunnel entrance” on the entire CP. Tunnel no. 8 is a 375-foot bore through Black Point. This rock is so hard that the average daily progress was only half that in nearby Summit Tunnel, and it took crews working from both ends seven months to finish it. This was the only tunnel other than Summit where nitroglycerin was used.
