Crested Peak from Railroad, roof of Snow Gallery (Alfred A. Hart, 1868)

"Crested Peak" is now known as "Donner Peak." The final stage of snow gallery construction was the installation of the roof. When complete, avalanches slid harmlessly across them. The man with his arms crossed is Arthur Brown, the Central Pacific’s superintendent of bridges and buildings.
