Hunter Falls Fire

Viewed from a ridge above the University of Nevada, the smoke from the May, 2014 Hunter Falls Fire is evident in the Mt. Rose Wilderness just west of the city limits. The fire began May 17 and was fully contained by the 23rd, thanks in part to rain and snow on the 21st. The blaze damaged 760 acres adjacent to a popular hiking trail and cost more than $1.5 million to extinguish.
