11 Apr Beatty Veterans of Foreign Wars
Beatty’s VFW Post #12108 is named after Sargeant John Strozzi, a Beatty resident who gave his life for his country in WWII. According to their website, the post has some 120 members and is known as “The Can Do Post.” They are housed in a 1905 church building which was moved to Beatty from nearby Rhyolite, now Nevada’s most visited ghost town. The post is located at 300 W Main St.
When you enter the bar/restaurant (canteen) area of the building, you will see on the walls a colorful display of military memorabilia, more than 90% of which is associated with a member of the Post.
One feature of the restaurant is the “ICBM Challenge.” Apparently just one intrepid diner survived this challenge and received his meal free of charge. The meal consists of a 7½ lb. monstrosity consisting of a burger topped with roast beef, ham, bacon, grilled onion, fries, onion rings, cheese, and BBQ sauce. The establishment requests that you order your ICBM 24 hours in advance.
The restaurant is open to members and guests each day from 3 p.m. to 9 p.m., but the bar opens at noon. Visitors are welcome. A present or former member of the military should be noted in the guest register. The camaraderie of the crowd of regulars is unmistakable, demonstrated by the animated conversations across the bar. You may note in the 360° view of the bar that no one is looking at their phone. As a private club, smoking is allowed in the bar area. A non-smoking room is available in the rear of the building.
