Sand Mountain

Sand Mountain

Located 20 miles east of Fallon, just off U.S. Route 50, the dune is two miles long and rises to 600 feet. While it is a destination playground for OHV users, it is also the unique habitat of the Sand Mountain Blue Butterfly and is sacred to the Fallon Paiute-Shoshone Tribe. The BLM, which manages the Sand Mountain Recreation Area, mediates the conflicts between ATVs, butterflies, and Native Americans. Just south are the ruins of the Sand Springs Pony Express Station, listed in the National Register of Historic Places.
