Searchlight

Between 1907 and 1910 the gold mines of Searchlight produced $7 million, but today it is best known as the home town of former Senate Democratic Leader Harry Reid. According to lore, the town was named when a prospector searching for the Lost Dutchman Mine in the area in 1897 noted that it would take a searchlight to find gold ore there. A headframe from a hillside mine looms over the community.
